Pro-Tips for Moving

Moving In

So I just finished moving for the 10th time in 10 years. I have a good handle on this! Here are some key points.

1. In the weeks leading up to your move, go through everything you own with a fierce eye. Do you really need that? Probably not. Get rid of it. Not having to move something is the optimal outcome.

2. Need boxes? Your local liquor store has boxes. Bonus: said boxes often have dividers in them, making packing your glasses and booze a no-brainer, as well as providing material for safely packing other things.

3. When packing your boxes, take the time to at least write what room they belong in on top (if you have money to burn, there is also moving tape that serves this purpose). Getting your boxes in the correct room the first time around saves some lifting, and expedites the unpacking process.

4. Moving out takes a lot longer than moving in. Plan your time and troops accordingly.

5. Once in your new place, your first priority should be to set up and make your bed. You will appreciate this later, when you are able to crash as soon as your body gives out; do not wait to do this when you are already tired.

6. Put a role of toilet paper in your purse, bag or in the front seat of your vehicle. You'll be glad to have it readily available and not buried at the back of a pile of boxes.

So true! I actually did this, but forgot to include it. Similarly: be kind, leave a fresh roll in your old place.

In addition to leaving the last roll of toilet paper, you should also never ever pack the light bulbs. That's beyond cheap. It's downright mean.

I moved last September and I was caught off guard by how much I needed to get done. I'm planning on another move sometime by the fall and I'll have to keep this post in mind.

I'm considering waiting until I move to get a new bed...I don't want to take the one I have here (which is basically a glorified cot) but even if I don't want to move have to move the new bed either what should I do about something to sleep on?

A blow-up mattress? Not the most elegant, but there are some pretty thick and comfortable ones, and easy to take with you when you move - nice to have for when you have company in the new place!
